Placements: A ‘How To’ Guide for Supervisors

About CHASE research placements

PhD researchers at CHASE member institutions can undertake a fully funded placement during their studies. The main criteria are:

  • They must be doing a PhD in an arts and humanities subject area.

  • The placement must represent suitable training and development for them.

  • The employer does not offer remuneration.

  • The placement is between 1 and 6 months full time equivalent (can be part time or full time).

  • Researchers should be past their first year of the PhD, although exceptions can be made.

PhD researchers can benefit from experience, a stipend, expenses support and a partial tuition fee waiver.

The placement host must name a Placement Supervisor and sign an agreement form.

If you know of any organisations that would be interested in participating in the placement scheme, please share our website link with them and encourage them to consider projects or roles they can offer.

About supervising a PhD researcher on a placement

Researchers are advised to discuss placement plans with their supervisor, so you should be aware of their intention to complete a placement in advance of their application.

Once the placement is secured, your PhD researcher will apply to CHASE for support. You will need to write a short statement of support confirming that:

  • You are happy for your researcher to do the placement.

  • You have discussed a modified work plan accounting for the time on placement.

  • The researcher has made suitable progress on their PhD thus far and taking time out to do a placement will not jeopardise timely completion.

The researcher will not be expected to make progress on their PhD on their placement, unless their work is split part-time. In this case, their rate of progress should be revised.

There is no requirement to visit the researcher on placement, but you are welcome to do so. Likewise, there are no requirements for maintaining contact.

Doing a placement does not change the final thesis submission date. Once the placement is completed, the doctoral researcher should return to their PhD studies.
